Sunrisers Hyderabad 127-5 beat
Kings XI Punjab 123-9 by five wickets
Indian Premier League 2013, Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad moved back to the top of the Indian Premier League 2013 table as Thisara Perera blasted three sixes in the 19th over to secure a five-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab.
Kings XI were making a spirited defence of their score of 127 for five but their hopes evaporated as Perera ruthlessly punished a series of length balls bowled by Azhar Mahmood to win the game with seven balls to spare.
Five players made a start for Kings XI after they won the toss and chose to bat but none could go on and make a substantial score, Adam Gilchrist top scoring with 26 in 25 balls and Piyush Chawla making 23 in 15.
For the Sunrisers, Ishant Sharma, Karan Sharma and Amit Mishra took two wickets apiece and Dale Steyn dismissed Gurkeerat Singh for 17.
It was then a similar story for Sunrisers as Quinton de Kock (0), Akshath Reddy (19), Cameron White (10) and Biplab Sumantray (19) got in and got out again.
However, they were given more of a platform than the visitors had managed thanks to 46 in 39 balls from Hanuma Vihari but with the score on 97 for five in the 17th over, the game was in the balance.
Perera then muscled three huge maximums as the experienced Mahmood was unable to change his length, allowing Perera to follow up one six over long on with two more, including the match-winning hit.
He finished on 23 not out in just 11 balls as the Sunrisers crowd rose to acclaim a fifth win from seven matches which saw the IPL’s newest team become the first to reach double figures this season.
